Following Jullian Gomes, Anonym and Ewan Pearson, Tim Paris offers again an exciting up & coming act completed by some tasty remixes for the new Marketing Music release.

Meet Polar, a belgian production and djing duo formed by DC Salas and Thomas Sari who already made some waves on labels like Doctor Vinyl or Toys For Boys. They contributed the two original tracks on the EP : “Merge” and “Dusty Vodoo“. On the remix front, Kill The Dj member and brand new Bpitch Control recording artist Chloe takes the already dark and bass heavy “Merge” into even darker territory while Tim Paris and singer Allonymous bring “Dusty Vodoo” on a completely different level, adding to the original groove haunting vocals and synths. The EP closes with a vocal free version of Tim’s remix.

Having been raised under the warmth of the African sun, on a diet of Portuguese chicken, Soul, Latin and Kwaito, it was the discovery of House music at a tender age that proved to be a defining moment. 2003 saw his first steps into the world of the DJ and it wasn’t long before he creating his very own beats and releasing on Realtone and Earthrumental, the esteemed labels of Frank Roger and Deepershades Recordings.  Following a successful participation in London’s Red Bull Music Academy, Jullian stayed on, hooked up with UK house don Atjazz and set about widening his musical horizons.  “Love Song 28” his debut for Marketing, proves that Jullian Gomes is a star in the making. Featuring the beautifully harmonic vocals of Bobby, “Love Song 28″ has a modern air of the genial Brian Wilson. Its shuffling percussion and pulsing synths work with the vocal to produce a true future classic.  Ewan Pearson provides the first of the remixes, laying the untouched vocal upon his brilliantly groovy low-slung acidic soundtrack, resplendent with cow-bell. An instrumental version of Ewan’s mix is also offered.  Anonym provides a deeper more hypnotic take with the warm bass and smooth keys of his Dub.

Trulz Kvam and Robin Crafoord (of Dance Disorder fame) form together norvegian electronic duet Trulz & Robin. Their first EP for Marketing Music is made of two very different piece of music : “Vibrating Cook” which is a play between drum programming and voice sampling and “Exotic Fruit” which is a more straight up techno affair. On the remix front we have another production team, this time from Budapest, known as Biscuit Reality. Their take on Vibrating Cook is a powerful indie-tinged dance music number.

Tim Paris’ Marketing Music label is back with Hiem new single “Freaky Nights” complete with two remixes by the label boss Tim Paris and French dj / producer Darabi of Get The Curse fame.

10 years together, Bozz & Nico formed Hiem from the ashes of The All Seeing I and Venini, with The All Seeing I bothering the charts with “The Beat Goes On” & “Walk Like a Panther”. Wearing their influences firmly on their sleeve (Sparks, Van Der Graff Generator, Daft Punk, John Cooper Clark) they have produced an album that passes through Lissom Disco, Electro and Techno and all points in between. With a back catalogue of hits under their belt for illustrious labels including Eskimo Recordings and Crosstown Rebels, as well as front man Bozzwellʼs critically lauded solo album “Bits & Pieces” released through Firm even managing to scoop an award nomination for German Music Criticʼs Record of the Year.

Hiem’s new take on disco pop “Freaky Nights” prefigures their forthcoming album “Escape From Division Street”. On the remix side Tim Paris twists the vocals to the max and add his trademark bleeps while Darabi heads for a straight up techno banger…

As always with Marketing, we got strange, edgy but very interesting material here. Darabi’s mix caught me first but Tim’s mix is a grower, I can feel it. Very singular release! One time proprietor of the infamous Atlas Records shop in Soho, London over a decade ago, Pete Herbert divides his time these days either behind the wheels of steel at clubs and parties around Europe or in the studio working solo or with friends on their various musical projects… He is found regularly behind the decks at places such as Fabric, Mondo, Goa, Cafe Capitol playing out an unexpected mix of Balearic leftfield disco/house/italo/dub/funk and beyond!!

Building up a dj reputation in Parisian underground circles, doing parties with Jef K, Chloé, Alexkid and Ivan Smagghe, working the dancefloor but also developing his skills in the studio, Tim Paris had his first breakthrough with the remix of a rock tune called “Future Now” that became one of the biggest underground tunes of 2004. From there Tim Paris didn’t stop but continued to release quality tracks and remixes.

The two come together as “Challenge,” on Tim’s imprint Marketing Music, the follow up to their 2008 release together on Kompakt (“Zimmer“). Just a few chords into the track, and its obvious to hear – the “Broken Clock E.P. ” has been too long coming…

The titular “Broken Clock” is a brooding piece of work.  The steady metronomic rhythms counteract the name, always uniform in their steady timekeeping.  Layering on top is a quasi disco-esque slant on straight up electronica;  we are lulled into a false sense of security with the live bass (that almost harks back to some of Death in Vegas’s better material…) only to be subtly positioned into a fully electronic machine with the staple bleeps and clicks that classic tracks are made of.

“Wind Up” follows on this trend but pushing itself more into the organic side of things.  The live drum breaks and shamelessly analogue synths mimicking plucked guitars to build up into a faux funk riff-off, all the while incomprehensible vocals stab in the background.  This track has shades of some real classic electronic experimental pieces of the golden age of synths and would sit well amongst these tracks, a proud thumb-up to the contemporary productions that saturate the market.

This said, if old-school isn’t your thing (or at least not THAT old school) then the “Wind Up: Genius of Time Remix” will suit your palate indefinitely. Genius of Time, aka ‘Cloud‘ from Gothenburg, Sweden…Pushes the hands of father time to the reference point in early house, the vocals are pushed to the front to build us up into a hazy groove, that you wish could go on forever…
